In the first season, her mother agreed to let Walter inject her with Compound V after she was born, but raised her to believe that her superpowers were a gift from God. Annie’s father left home because he didn’t approve of what happened to his daughter, and her mother claimed that her father left home because he had spent the family’s savings. Annie was raised as a conservative Christian and participated in superhero beauty pageants as part of her mother’s training for her to become a candidate for the Seven.
In the first season, Annie was sexually assaulted by Diver King shortly after becoming a new member of the Seven. After she prevented a date assault and Walter scolded her for being a chivalrous man in civilian clothes, Annie was forced to wear a very revealing new uniform that was said to “represent female empowerment”. She began a relationship with Hughie, who discovered that her true identity was Starlight. Their relationship became strained when Annie learned about Hughie’s involvement with the Boys, the truth about Compound V, and its role in the creation of metahumans.
In the second season, Annie becomes a spy for the Boys and helps them leak the truth about Compound V to the media. She continues to date Hughie, but temporarily breaks off the relationship due to fear of retaliation from Homelander and Walter. Stormfront and Homelander later catch her secretly assisting the Boys and imprison her, but Hughie helps her escape. Despite betraying Walter, Starlight is forgiven by Walter and returns to the Seven at the end of the season, with Stormfront being blamed for the events of the season.
