Vergil is one of the two demon-human hybrid sons of the demon lord Sparda, and possesses demonic powers. He has appeared in three video games as the main antagonist opposite his twin brother Dante, as well as in a novel and a manga based on the series. He is a secondary antagonist in Devil May Cry 3 (2005) and the main antagonist in Devil May Cry 5 (2019), though he becomes an anti-hero by the end. Vergil also reappeared in the 2013 video game DmC: Devil May Cry as the leader of a group of rebellious vigilantes determined to stop the demon lord Mondas. In the main series, Daniel Southworth voices and performs motion capture for Vergil.
Vergil was originally portrayed as Nero Angelo in the 2001 game – a rival to Dante in terms of movement and appearance. Although the character seemingly died as a child, Devil May Cry director Hideki Kamiya allowed Devil May Cry 3 screenwriter Bingo Morihashi to change this event so that Vergil could appear as a young man in the prequel game. Many characters in the series are named after characters in the poem The Divine Comedy by Italian poet Dante Alighieri; Vergil is named after Vergil.
The character has received positive reviews from video game publications, some of which praised his role as a boss, as well as his playability in the Devil May Cry Special Edition.
